About Zentsuji

Welcome to Sohonzan Zentsuji Homepage.

Fee for tour of the ordination platform and treasures

Zentsuji Temple is the birthplace of one of the most revered figures of Japanese Buudahism, the high priest Kobo Daishi, or "Kukai". This is the Sohonzan ( the head temple of a Buddhist sect ) of the Shingonshu Zentsuji sect. Kobo Daishi built this temple himself when he returned from China. He began in 807, taking six years to complete it, and nemed the temple after his father, Lord Yoshimichi.
Together with Toji Temple in Kyoto and Mt. Koya in Wakayama, this temple is noted as one of the three holy sites linked to Kobo Daishi.

The temple grounds cover an area of about 45,000 square meters and are divided into the Eastern temple and Western temple. Many people from around the country have visited the site, known as the 75 th temple of Japan's famed pilgrimage of the 88 Sacred Temples of Shikoku, which traces the route on which the young Kobo Daishi was trained.
